Passage 2

A study commissioned by a group that encourages the production of family-friendly movies found that G-rated movies are more profitable than R-rated films, yet far more of the racier films get made. The study, released Tuesday by The Dove Foundation, showed that the average G-rated flick was 11 times more profitable than its R-rated counterpart, but the film industry made more than 12 times as many R-rated as G-rated movies from 1989-2003.

The study examined the costs and revenues associated with the 200 most widely distributed films released by major Hollywood studies each year the 15-year period. All the figures used were limited to the first two years of each movie’s release. There were 2,982 films studies. The number was less than 3,000 because some movies were among the top 200 for two years.

Slightly more than half, or 51.4 percent, of the releases received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. The next most popular ratings category was PG-13 at 28.4 percent, followed by PG at 16.1 percent and G at 4.1 percent. While the average G-rated movie earned a $79 million profit, the average R-rated film was $6.9 million in the black, the study said. An average film with a PG rating was more profitable ($28.3 million) than a PG-13-rated one ($23.5 million).

“Basically, what we’re pointing out is what is considered to be conventional wisdom in Hollywood does not hold up when you look at the actual profitability and compare it with that the people want,” said Dick Rolfe, founder and chairman of the Grand Rapids-based organization.

His group recently criticized Burger King Corp, for a children’s promotion linked to “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith” because the hit movie is rated PG-13. The study used figures provided by Kagan Research LLC, a Monterey, Calif-based media business research firm. Grand valley state University’s Siedman College of Business then analysed the numbers, Rolfe said.

Messages seeking comment on the study were left at the MPAA’s press office in Washington. “I have been speaking and writing about this phenomenon, literally, for 14 years,” said film critic, book author and nationally syndicated radio talk show host Michael Medved. His 1992 book, Hollywood vs. America, devotes a chapter to a computer study in which he compared the box office receipts of all 600 movies that Hollywood released a year earlier, Medved found the average PG-rated film performed three times better than the average R-rated picture in 1991.

1. According to the study, what is the correct position of the PG-13 films in terms of its profit?

A. The most profitable film among the four categories is A PG-13-rated film.

B. A PG-rating is the least profitable film among the four categories.

C. A PG-13-rated film is less profitable than a PG rating but more profitable than an R-rated one.

D. A G-rated film is more profitable than the PG-13-rated on but less than the R-rating.

2. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to Paragraph 2?

A. They mainly study the costs and revenues of the studied films.

B. Some movies can be the most widely distributed more than one year.

C. The 2,982 studied films were released during the 15-year period from 1989-2003.

D. The Hollywood studies released 2,982 films during 1989-2003.

3. Which of the following statement is TRUE according to the passage?

A. A PG-rated film is considered more appropriate than the G rating for children to watch.

B. Burger King corporation was criticized by Dick Rolfe for promoting movies to children.

C. The more profitable movie enjoys more popularity as well.

D. Hollywood released 600 movies in 1991.

4. What does “this phenomenon” in the last paragraph refer to?

A. That the average PG-rated film performed was three times better than the average R-rated picture in 1991.

B. That Medved has studied the PG-rated films for 14 years.

C. A computer study in which he compared the box office receipts of all 600 movies.

D. That PG-rated films are more profitable than the R-rated ones.

5. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. A study shows that G-rated films are more profitable than R-rated films.

B. A study shows that G-rated films are more popular than R-rated films.

C. R-rated films are more interesting than G-rated films.

D. PG-13 are the most profitable films among the four categories.

Passage 2

题目考查的是4个选项中对PG-13分级的电影收益的正确描述,故可以定位在原文第三段后半段“While the average G-rated movie earned a $79 million profit, the average R-rated film was $6.9 million in the black, the study said. An average film with a PG rating was more profitable ($28.3 million) than a PG-13-rated one ($23.5 million).”

(The study examined the costs and revenues...),故A符合原文;B选项对应第二段最后一句“…some movies were among the top 200 for two years”,故B符合原文;根据第二段第一句话后半段“…the 200 most widely distributed films released by major Hollywood studies each year during the 15-year period.”以及倒数第二句There were 2,982 films studies. 可知C符合原文;D选项,由第二段第一句话“… with the 200 most widely distributed films …”

Basically, what we’re pointing out is what is considered to be conventional wisdom in Hollywood does not hold up when you look at the actual profitability and compare it with that the people want.

47.【答案】A。 (A study commissioned by a group that encourages the production of family-friendly movies found that G-rated movies are more profitable than R-rated films...),接着下文展开了具体阐述。
